Yemen crisis: a humanitarian disaster that's getting worse

In Yemen the situation is desperate.

It has been nine years since the conflict escalated, but the humanitarian crisis remains severe. More than 80 per cent of people in Yemen struggle to access food, safe drinking water and adequate health services. Only half of Yemen's healthcare facilities are functioning, and even those face an extreme lack of shortages of medical supplies and personnel.

Yemeni people continue to face the most extreme impacts of the conflict, compounded by climate disasters and a failing economy.

How is the Red Cross helping people in Yemen?

The Yemen Red Crescent Society (YRCS) continue to be the main community-based humanitarian charity in Yemen, supporting people across the country to access basic services and begin to rebuild their lives.

With the help of our supporters, we are working with YRCS disaster response teams to prepare and respond to disasters and are supporting their emergency health services. We also provide support to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), helping them to reach people with safe drinking water, access to healthcare and emergency food.

Yemen crisis appeal: key facts

• Two-thirds of the population (21.6 million people) require some form of humanitarian aid or protection support.
• 17.3 million people in Yemen are food insecure, making them among the most acutely food insecure countries in the world.
• With only half of the country's health facilities functioning, 20.3 million have no access to healthcare.
• Years of conflict and neglected water infrastructure has left 15.3 million people in need of water and sanitation support.
• Yemen faces the sixth largest internal displacement crisis in the world. Around 4.5 million people have been internally displaced.

The Red Cross is working in Yemen to provide vital aid such as food, water and medication to people who have been forced to flee their homes.
