Humanitarian crisis in Lebanon: Over 1,000 people killed and hundreds of thousands displaced

The escalating violence along the Israel-Lebanon border has triggered a deepening humanitarian crisis in Lebanon. As countless individuals face displacement, injury, and loss, the urgent need for protection, shelter, and essential assistance has reached critical levels. Families are struggling to find safety, while many are left without basic necessities like food, blankets, and medical care.

Your support can make a profound difference in the lives of people affected in Lebanon, helping to provide immediate aid to those who need it most during this devastating time.

Aid alone will not solve this crisis, but it will save lives. People urgently need essential aid like blankets, mattresses and hygiene kits.

The British Red Cross has been working in partnership with the Lebanese Red Cross for many years, and our Gaza Crisis Appeal is helping support the Lebanese Red Cross to provide vital humanitarian aid to those affected by the fighting.

The best and quickest way to help people in Lebanon is to donate to the Gaza Crisis Appeal now. Your donation will help people in Lebanon, Gaza and other areas affected by the fighting who are most in need. We will continue to support all communities there for as long as we are needed.

What is the Red Cross and Red Crescent doing to help people in Lebanon?

The Lebanese Red Cross has been at the forefront of the humanitarian response in Lebanon, providing round-the-clock support to communities and is focused on scaling up its efforts as needs increase. Across Lebanon, as of 30 September, the Lebanese Red Cross has distributed:

  • 45,988 ready meals

  • 14,546 bread
  • 43,024 water bottles

In Israel, Magen David Adom is on its highest level of alert, preparing to respond to the humanitarian needs of those affected by the fighting, as it has done since 7 October 2023.

Teams from across the Movement will continue to respond across the wider region, and the British Red Cross will work closely with the Palestine Red Crescent Society, Magen David Adom in Israel, the Lebanese Red Cross, the ICRC, and other National Societies to support all communities affected by this conflict.

Where will my money go?

Our focus is where the humanitarian need is the greatest. The Gaza Crisis appeal will support people in Gaza and affected areas and those potentially impacted in the future by this crisis, including Lebanon. Gift Aid claimed on donations received in response to this appeal will be used to fund the whole of our work. In the event there are surplus funds raised for this appeal these will be used for the general charitable purposes of the British Red Cross.

The importance of neutrality and impartiality

We are a humanitarian organisation that stands for neutrality and impartiality in times of crisis – these principles are the beating heart of every single action we take. Our neutrality is what allows us to access communities, gain trust, and work behind the scenes to get help where it’s needed most.

Decisions on who, how, and why we provide support to those suffering are based on where there is need. As a humanitarian organisation, we are not here to take sides. We are not here to measure one life against another. We are here to relieve suffering – and we will continue to do all we can.
