The Sudan crisis: 24.6 million people face acute hunger
Today, Sudan faces one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Two years of conflict has left millions struggling without the basics needed to survive.
Since April 2023, up to 150,000 people have been killed, making it the world’s fourth deadliest conflict. Millions of people all over the country don’t have access to the essentials needed to survive: food, clean water and healthcare.
Over 30 million people – more than two thirds of Sudan’s population – need humanitarian aid:
- 3.5 million children are malnourished
- over 30 per cent of the population has been displaced, a total of nearly 12.9 million people
- 80 per cent of health centres have been forced to close in the most conflict-affected areas.
Red Cross and Red Crescent teams are working in the country now, to help support communities at breaking point.

How is the Red Cross helping people in Sudan?
The Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) has been supporting people in all 18 states of Sudan since the beginning of the crisis, with more than 12,000 volunteers on the ground.
Since then, they have:
- reached over 7.7 million people with humanitarian aid
- distributed food and cash, reaching 1.2 million people in Khartoum, Darfur and 11 other states of Sudan, in partnership with the World Food Programme
The International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and other National Societies are also working together on their response.
That includes:
- ensuring supplies of clean water for nearly 2.2 million people
- providing food support to more than 200,000 people
- establishing community kitchens in partnership with SRCS, providing two hot meals per day for around 10,000 displaced people
- supporting 88 hospitals with emergency trauma supplies reaching 6,800 patients
The British Red Cross is helping support the response in Sudan through our Disaster Fund, as well as other specialist support, which includes cash assistance for families experiencing severe levels of food insecurity.
In Chad, where more than 750,000 Sudanese refugees have fled, the British Red Cross works closely with the Chad Red Cross, funding and collaborating on programmes across the country. These programmes include providing access to clean and safe drinking water and distributing food and hygiene supplies.

Why are donations to the Disaster Fund important?
The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the world’s largest humanitarian network, and our teams work tirelessly to be a lifeline to those hit by disasters.
Our teams rely on the Disaster Fund to launch an emergency response and get critical help to people impacted as soon as possible. In 2024 alone, the Disaster Fund helped us respond to 19 different emergencies.
When an emergency turns lives upside down, it’s a race against time. By donating today, we can act faster when the worst happens. Crucially, that means we can reach more people with lifechanging and lifesaving support.
Once the initial aftermath of a disaster is over, we do not leave people’s side – we continue to provide support so they can heal, move forward, and rebuild their lives.
But we need your help to do that. Please give what you can.
