Coronavirus is spreading in the world’s most vulnerable communities, with millions of lives at stake. Families living in refugee camps, in conditions that make social distancing near impossible, are facing another deadly threat: Covid-19. 
For so many people, this is an emergency on top of an already unbearable situation. It goes without saying that the scale of this crisis is huge. It’s why the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has launched an emergency appeal, coordinating 14 charities in the UK to work together to scale up operations and save lives. The British Red Cross is proud to be part of this effort and we need your help.

We know that simple measures like hand-washing can save lives but are practically impossible in crowded refugee camps. And hospitals simply don’t have the staff or resources to cope.

Why are people so heavily affected in these countries and areas by COVID-19?

Covid-19 has had a disastrous impact all over the world, and even countries with well-developed health systems are struggling to cope with the pandemic.

However, in countries already in the midst of humanitarian crises caused by conflicts, natural disasters and climate change, millions of people face even more devastating effects. Among a range of humanitarian challenges and a lack of access to essential services, refugees and families are at particular risk from the spread of Covid-19 due to:

&#8226;Weak health systems:

Many countries in danger do not have enough beds, specialist equipment or the staff needed to treat the most serious cases of Covid-19.

&#8226;Lack of clean water and hygiene:

The water, sanitation and hygiene services that are essential to prevent the spread of coronavirus are not always accessible.

&#8226;Hunger and malnutrition:

Covid-19 will significantly affect populations who are undernourished, and the UN and the World Food Programme warn that the number of people facing acute hunger could nearly double.

&#8226;Loss of livelihoods:

Millions of people do not have access to social protection and have lost the ability to produce food or earn a living as a result of lockdowns and supply disruption.
